We thought you might want to hear for yourself how Yuriy Zmysly is doing since he began his treatments at NextSteps and Turner Chiropractic and Rehab. As you may recall, Yuriy suffered an anoxic brain injury following a routine appendectomy on his base in North Carolina. At the time, the doctors said that he would never walk, talk, or see again. We asked his wife, Aimee to give us her impressions as to how Yuriy is doing today.
"Over the past few months since Yuriy has been going to NextSteps along with Dr. Turner, I have noticed positive changes in him. The most noticeable is that he is smiling more and responding better when people talk to him. He actually will look in the direction of the person - before he would look away or not look at all.
He is much stronger now than when he started just a few short months ago. He is able to stand up with assistance for longer periods of time. He is able to walk more easily with assistance and he is sitting up straighter in his chair.
Yuriy enjoys being challenged and at NextSteps he is challenged every time he goes. Each day, they have him walk farther and farther; but, they also look for quality in the way he walks. The Locomat is essential in his rehab because it shows his body the right way to move his legs - when he gets off the machine and walks with his therapist his gait is much better.
Dr. Turner has been important in his recovery as well. The cold laser and eye light glasses have improved his vision. Yuriy's eyes are moving better and he is noticing more and more things while he is in the car and at home. Just the other day he told me he saw a blue building and it was about 40 feet away!
I was just looking at the videos from a few months ago and I am amazed at how much stronger he looks now. I can't say enough good things about NextSteps, Dr. Turner and the Laurus Foundation for making this possible. Yuriy deserves the best treatment and that's exactly what he is getting."
